12.27.10 - Flunker Family Fun Day 2010

Its the best day of the entire year! Especially when we're away from family for so long. One of my favorite traditions of our family is having a family day on the day after Christmas where we all tour around to the Uncle's houses and spend all day snacking, looking at gifts and playing football in the snow.

This year did not disappoint. After a long drive up to Wisconsin through the night we made it to the snowy north. My parents waited to cut our Christmas tree until we arrived, so we spent an afternoon hunting down the perfect tree for our family.

We also spent a long time down at our land, which is getting clearcut, and Micah and I got to ride on the tractor while it cut down trees.

Then after our Christmas Eve church service our family settled in for a busy Christmas day, and there were lots of presents. Micah had a lot of fun, and everyone had lots to be thankful for.

After cleaning up and packing up it was time for our traditional drive down to Grandma's house for the Flunker Christmas. And the farm house was packed! We had a wonderful time playing games, eating Grandma's good cooking (with pies leftover for later!), and opening more presents - to be followed by the traditional wrapping paper fight!

Then comes Flunker Family Fun Day, and because of an afternoon Packer game it would have to be an early Flunker Ice Bowl, (although this year was more like a "snow" bowl). The cousins are all getting really athletic, and yet the uncles are getting older, so the playing field is become more and more level.

This year the snow was deep, and I tried to get Micah to come out and play, but he didn't like the snow so much. However in the course of those who did play there were plenty of diving catches, red-zone interceptions, and illegal holds, pushes, and pass interferences!

After the snowy family duel, we were all soaked and freezing, and spent the rest of the day thawing out and gnawing on Christmas goodies (and watching the Packers kick butt). The Flunker Family Fun Day is literally the best day of the year. God has blessed us with an amazing family, that for all our faults we still love each other despite anything.

Christmas can get overwhelming with all the travel and materialistic demands, but spending time with family is my absolute favorite. Next to the advent of our Lord, its the very best gift I could receive each year.
